Chapter 18
Roxanne was thankful her mother had taken Dina shopping. Carefully, she pulled the box of notebooks from the closet until she found the one she was looking for. She thumbed through it and took photos of each page. When she reached a page in the middle, she hesitated over a name. It was a nickname, and it was familiar. Turning back, she checked the date and nodded. âSo thatâs why she wanted the journals.â Finding one of Janieâs old journals at the bottom of the stack that was only half full, she pulled pages from the notebook and hid the important information in the other journal, pinning the pages with a paperclip. Seeing the gap in the notebook, she wondered if Dina would notice it. Not wanting to draw too much attention to it, she took out a few old sheets to fill in the space. She hoped to muddy things until she could get Kendra and Mikayla away from Dina.
Roxanne began formulating a plan to let her sister know where sheâd gone and about her daughter. Janie had a right to know about Mikayla. In the storage shed she found some camping equipment and began planning her get away. She needed to leave before Dina realized sheâd found the journals. The journals were only a last resort. If Dina knew what she was looking for, then it wouldnât take her long to find the information. Roxanne sighed, she wasnât sure how many people knew her grandmother had once been called Dodie, but she doubted there were any still alive other than her grandmother who knew sheâd once been old man Bartonâs favorite girl. She cringed... they were kin to the Bartons. Her mother was heir to the Barton family estate. She tucked Janieâs old journal into one of the vanity drawers. Would the journal entry be enough to prove her motherâs claim to the Barton estate? Roxanne was no lawyer, but sheâd watched enough court dramas on television and read enough books to doubt it. So, what was the big deal, unless Dina already had proof, maybe proof she was an heir? Roxanne thought about that, could it be possible, she knew Dina was adopted. If sheâd learned she was one of old man Bartonâs heirs, maybe she wanted to destroy any evidence that might contradict her own claims. That sounded more like it.
